Creating a Beautiful Planted Aquarium for Mehar Sir

Updated: Feb 10

Transforming an Old Aquarium into a Natural Paradise

Meher Sir had an old aquarium filled with Koi and sharks. It featured a power filter and was decorated with pebbles and artificial plants. He wanted a new setup that would look beautiful and natural. We decided to create a planted tank with various species of barbs, tetras, livebearers, and angelfish.

The Scaping Process

The scaping of this tank was a long and meticulous process that required a lot of patience. We prepared a timeline for the entire process, and Meher Sir was ready to begin.

To create a proper ecosystem for our mini biodiversity, we started with a hang-on-back filter and ensured adequate light penetration in the system. We built caves using holorock to provide hiding spots for the fish. The substrate was ADA soil, and we kept the background and foreground empty for the plants. We cycled the tank for 14 days to establish a healthy colony of beneficial bacteria.

Selecting the Right Plants

We chose several plants for the tank, including Vallisneria, Coin Plant, Hornwort, Amazon Sword, and Rotala Pink. These plants not only enhanced the aquarium's appearance but also contributed to a healthy environment for the fish.

Choosing the Fish

The fish selected for this setup included tetras, barbs, and angelfish. To create a proper school, we introduced Serpae Tetra and Bonus Tetra. We also stocked livebearers like Red Swordtails and Black Mollies. To add a majestic touch, we included Platinum Angelfish. For a graceful presence, we added native Indian barbs, including Pool Spotfin Swamp Barb, One Spot Barb, and Pool Barb. A Golden Algae Eater was introduced to help control excess algae in the setup.

Overcoming Setbacks

We faced some setbacks during the process. One Golden Algae Eater and a school of Fluorescent Widow Tetras unfortunately did not survive. We replaced them with barbs to maintain the tank's balance.

Achieving Our Goal

The best part of this project was achieving our goal of creating a beautiful tank setup. The smile on Mehar Sir's face and that of his family made all the effort worthwhile.

Conclusion

Creating a planted aquarium is a rewarding experience. It requires careful planning, patience, and a love for aquatic life. If you are considering setting up your own aquarium, I encourage you to take your time and enjoy the process.
